A tattoo artist in Yuma, Arizona, is facing criticism after tattooing a 9-year-old girl’s arm with an American flag, following her initial request for a portrait of former President Donald Trump on her neck.
The incident, which occurred at Black Onyx Empire Tattoo, was captured in a video shared on Instagram by the artist, known as ‘cutzsosa,’ and has since sparked a heated debate on social media about the ethics and legality of tattooing minors, even with parental consent.
The girl, along with her parents, travelled to the tattoo parlour from out of state for the tattoo. Initially wanting a Trump portrait, the artist reportedly persuaded her to opt for a patriotic U.S. flag on her arm.
According to Sosa, he tattooed the girl’s arm about a year ago but advised her to wait a year to reconsider her decision. When she returned last month for a red touch-up on the flag, she confirmed she wanted to proceed with the tattoo.
While all 50 U.S. states have laws restricting minors from getting tattoos, Arizona allows exceptions with parental consent. Sosa’s decision did not violate the law, but many in the tattoo industry have questioned its ethical implications.
Ben Shaw, a representative from the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, expressed concern over the impact this decision could have on the reputation of the profession.
Sosa attempted to defend his actions, explaining that the girl and her family, who are originally from Turkey, have a tradition of getting tattoos.
