A ceremony in Islamabad honoured Pakistani mountaineers who scaled some of the world’s highest peaks.
The event celebrated national heroes, including Sirbaz Khan and Shehroze Kashif, who raised the Pakistani flag on challenging summits worldwide.
The organisers stated that the purpose of the event was to encourage youth and promote tourism in Pakistan. Attendees praised the climbers’ achievements and distributed shields among them during the event.
Sarbaz Khan highlighted his recent accomplishments, sharing that he climbed all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres globally, including five in Pakistan, seven in Nepal, and two in Tibet, China, completing his latest ascent in October.
The event also saw participation from notable climbers like Ashraf Aman, the first Pakistani to summit K2; Colonel (Retired) Sher Khan; and Selena Khawaja, who reached the 7,000-metre-high Spantik Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan at just nine years old.
Selena expressed her aspirations, stating she attempted Nanga Parbat twice and planned to climb it again next year.
She appreciated the event for providing exposure and opportunities to meet experienced mountaineers.
Organiser Remiya Ali stressed the importance of such events in encouraging people globally to visit Pakistan and take an interest in the country’s tourism.
