The Punjab government has announced plans to launch an electric taxi service across the province, implementing a model similar to China's successful EV taxi programs. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan will oversee the initiative, following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The Punjab Transport Department has begun preliminary work on the program, engaging with multiple electric vehicle manufacturers. Both the Deewan Group and National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have expressed interest in participating in the project.
Implementation will proceed in phases, with initial operations focusing on Lahore and divisional headquarters before expanding to other major cities across Punjab. The service will operate around the clock, providing continuous transportation options for residents.

The program includes provisions for drivers to acquire electric vehicles through flexible payment options, including down payments and installment plans. This approach aims to make vehicle ownership more accessible to potential taxi operators.
Environmental concerns, particularly rising air pollution from vehicle emissions, drove the development of this initiative. The transport department expects the program to deliver dual benefits: reducing urban air pollution while creating new employment opportunities in the transportation sector.
The government has not yet announced specific launch dates or vehicle pricing structures for the program.
