Pakistan’s efforts towards economic recovery and growth are receiving critical support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SIFC). The collaboration has brought attention from global institutions to the country’s strategic development initiatives.
Currently, seven major development projects are being carried out with ADB’s assistance. Among them is a $200 million project aimed at modernizing Pakistan's electricity transmission system, which includes the installation of smart meters for Distribution Companies (DISCOs). This project is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of electricity distribution across the country.
Additionally, ADB has approved a supplementary grant of $330 million for social protection programs in Pakistan. This funding will primarily focus on enhancing education and healthcare for women and children, two key areas of concern for the government.
In the fiscal reform sector, ADB is providing support for the digitalization of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), a move that aligns with Pakistan’s broader tax reform objectives. This assistance is aimed at streamlining tax collection processes and improving transparency.
Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change has also been recognized globally. ADB has allocated $500 million to support the country's efforts to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, an area of growing importance given the country’s vulnerability to environmental disasters.
Further, the government is considering establishing a timely flood warning system, which aims to reduce annual losses of over $2 billion caused by natural disasters. This initiative is part of Pakistan's long-term strategy to minimize damage from such events and build resilience against future climate challenges.
Looking ahead, the country is expected to see the initiation of 16 more development projects in the upcoming year. These projects are anticipated to boost industrial production and strengthen investor confidence, contributing to an overall economic recovery.
