The Ministry of Law and Justice announced on Tuesday comprehensive reforms in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, aimed at modernising the legal process and improving judicial efficiency.
According to the ministry, the proposed amendments have been approved by the federal cabinet. A committee, formed under the leadership of the prime minister, presented the suggestions.
The ministry highlighted that the amendments reflect extensive consultations with bar councils, prominent lawyers, prosecutors, and judges.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Law revealed that first information reports (FIRs) would now be electronically registered after initial inquiries. It further clarified that only female officers would be authorised to arrest women under the new reforms.
“The amendments are designed to introduce modern investigative tools, including audio and video recordings, to ensure accuracy of evidence,” stated the Ministry of Law.
The ministry added that prosecutors would be empowered to identify flaws in police reports, while the new provisions aim to expedite trials and appeals across the judicial system.
