President Asif Ali Zardari has reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to fostering regional marine cooperation and ensuring peace, progress, and sustainability in the Indian Ocean region.
In a video message at the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Cooperation, held in Kunming, China, the president emphasized the need for collective efforts to utilize the ocean’s vast potential while addressing critical challenges such as climate change, pollution, and ecosystem degradation.
“Pakistan is prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to promote marine cooperation, ensuring our region remains a hub of peace, progress, and sustainability,” he remarked.
Organized by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the forum, held from December 14 to 16, focused on strengthening maritime sector collaboration among participating nations.
President Zardari highlighted that the future of global economic growth lies in the East, driven by its vast population and resources. He underlined Pakistan’s initiatives to expand its blue economy, including the National Maritime Policy, sustainable fisheries and marine conservation programs, and the Living Indus Project aimed at protecting ecosystems and combating pollution.
The president also drew attention to the strategic development of Gwadar Port under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is transforming into a hub for regional connectivity and maritime trade. He praised the Belt and Road Initiative for fostering knowledge exchange, technological innovation, and marine conservation between Pakistan and China.
Acknowledging China’s Global Development Initiative and CIDCA’s efforts, President Zardari lauded the forum’s focus on sustainability, capacity building, and support for island nations. He noted that these priorities align with Pakistan’s vision for transnational cooperation and environmental stewardship.
Expressing confidence in the forum’s outcomes, the President stated, “I am confident this platform will open new avenues for economic collaboration among member states.” He further stressed the importance of collective action to protect marine resources and advance the blue economy for future generations.
The forum brought together leaders, policymakers, and experts from the region to explore opportunities for sustainable maritime collaboration and development.
