Cristiano Ronaldo - the globally celebrated Portuguese footballer - may be contemplating a conversion to Islam.
In a recent interview on an Arab TV programme, Abdullah highlighted Ronaldo’s growing respect for Islamic customs and traditions since his arrival in Saudi Arabia.
The former goalkeeper, who played alongside Ronaldo during his tenure with Al-Nassr, shared insights into the football star's efforts to immerse himself in local culture.
“Ronaldo genuinely wants to convert to Islam. I spoke to him about it, and he expressed interest,” Abdullah disclosed.
He recounted Ronaldo’s participation in an Islamic prostration after scoring a goal, a gesture that resonated deeply with his teammates, who collectively chanted “Allahu Akbar” in celebration.
Abdullah further noted that Ronaldo has consistently encouraged his colleagues to adhere to their religious practices, even pausing training sessions during the call to prayer.
“When the call to prayer sounds during training, Ronaldo asks the coach to stop until it finishes,” he said, adding that this sensitivity reflects the star’s evolving understanding of Islamic customs.
Influences from former teammates
Ronaldo’s interest in Islam is not new, Abdullah explained, citing previous influences from his Real Madrid teammates Mesut Özil and Karim Benzema, both devout Muslims. Their discussions about faith and practices appear to have left a lasting impression on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Abdullah also shared how Ronaldo frequently sought his guidance upon arriving in Saudi Arabia, unfamiliar with the country's culture and traditions. “In the beginning, I was close to Cristiano because he wasn’t aware of many things about the club or local customs. He often asked questions, eager to learn,” he revealed.
The football icon’s adaptation to life in Saudi Arabia has not gone unnoticed. Abdullah praised Ronaldo’s humility and discipline, describing him as a role model for others. “He is one of the most dedicated and straightforward athletes I have met,” he said, adding that Ronaldo’s warm interactions with his teammates and locals have endeared him further to the Saudi community.
Despite Abdullah’s remarks and growing speculation, there has been no official confirmation from Ronaldo regarding his religious beliefs or a potential conversion. However, his gestures, including prostrating on the field and encouraging prayer observance, continue to generate widespread admiration among his Muslim fans.
