The government, in cooperation with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), has been able to do much to privatize the power sector to enhance efficiency and attract investment.
The government will speed up the privatization process for three of the top performers among the power distribution companies. These DISCOs will be Islamabad, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad. These companies share 52% of the control of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The government will establish a steering committee that supervises and harmonizes relevant efforts across relevant government bodies so that coordination is seamless. Also, it addresses stakeholder concerns, identifies possible risks, and presents possible solutions to enhance the chances of success for privatization.
The steering committee will provide weekly progress reports to ensure that the process is transparent and accountable throughout the journey. Moreover, there is a comprehensive outreach strategy in place to address concerns and to inform stakeholders about the initiative.
The government expects that with SIFC, privatization of DISCOs will attract investment and enable the facilitation of solving the persistent problems that are affecting the energy sector.
