Minister of State for Interior, Shaza Fatima, defended the government’s decision to block X (formerly Twitter), stating that it was carried out in accordance with directives from the Ministry of Interior to protect national security.
She emphasized that the blocking of X was not a restriction on freedom of expression, noting that less than 2 percent of Pakistan's population uses the platform.
Speaking on the broader issue of cybersecurity, Fatima highlighted the increasing occurrence of cyber attacks in the country and stressed the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures.
"Cybersecurity is the need of the hour," she stated, adding that the Ministry of Interior has instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take necessary actions to safeguard the nation’s digital space.
Fatima clarified that the blocking of X does not affect Pakistan's IT industry, noting that platforms like YouTube and Facebook continue to allow free expression.
She also pointed out that Pakistan's broadband industry remains unaffected and has been a major contributor to the country's digital economy, with IT exports reaching record levels.
On the topic of national security, the Minister reiterated that the safety of foreign dignitaries, such as the recent visit of the President of Belarus, remains a top priority for the government. "The security of foreign guests is our responsibility," Fatima assured.
Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting and protecting the IT industry while ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
