WhatsApp’s latest update has stirred up a wave of discontent among users as the app ditches its iconic "typing..." indicator in favour of an animated speech bubble.
The feature, introduced without prior announcement, has left many users questioning its necessity.
The change replaces the familiar "typing…" notification—typically visible at the top of a chat—with a dynamic, moving bubble situated below the last message. While subtle in design, the alteration has been divisive, with several users criticising it for being distracting.
According to the Daily Mail, the update closely resembles the typing animation seen in Apple’s iMessage, but WhatsApp users have not taken kindly to the shift. Social media platforms are now rife with complaints, with many describing the feature as "unhelpful" and "annoying." One user went so far as to claim the animation "purposely gives me anxiety."
WhatsApp, owned by tech giant Meta, has not provided an official statement addressing the backlash. However, it is expected that the update will be rolled out globally in the coming days, marking another design shift for the app.
While the animated bubble aims to modernise the interface, it has reignited debates over whether such changes truly enhance user experience or merely complicate familiar functions.
Some have speculated that the feature might align with WhatsApp’s broader strategy to make the app’s aesthetics more uniform across platforms.
