London’s South Terminal at Gatwick Airport was evacuated this morning following a security incident, causing significant disruption for passengers and flights.
The incident, initially reported at 9:55 am as a "passenger security investigation," escalated to a gold-level emergency at 11:08 am. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Gatwick Airport announced, "A large part of the South Terminal has been evacuated as a precaution while we continue to investigate a security incident. Passengers will not be able to enter the South Terminal while this is ongoing."
The airport emphasized that safety and security are their top priorities, adding that they are "working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
Flights departing from the South Terminal have been delayed, with information updates expected at 1:52 pm. Passengers have been advised to avoid re-entering the terminal until it is declared safe. Those traveling via the North Terminal remain unaffected, according to airport officials.
On-site reports describe "total mayhem," as emergency services collaborate with security teams to address the situation. Departing passengers have been asked to stay away from flight gates and the departure lounge.
