Lahore's air quality has deteriorated to dangerous levels, with the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 293, according to the International Air Monitor. The situation has persisted for over ten hours, posing significant health risks.
The air quality in Sundar Industrial Estate hit a staggering AQI of 569, followed by Shimla Pahari at 519 and the city center at 511. Other areas also reported hazardous levels: Johar Town (416), Gulberg (388), Defense Phase 8 (376), Garden Town (360), and Defense Phase 5 (346).
The air is now 43.6 times more polluted than the World Health Organization's recommended guidelines.
To mitigate the crisis, authorities have intensified enforcement. Sixty-three shops violating standard operating procedures were sealed, 127 smoke-emitting vehicles were challaned, and 47 polluting vehicles were detained at police stations. A total of Rs. 7 lakh in fines was imposed on vehicles operating without fitness certificates.
The district administration has also ordered markets to close by 8 PM and restaurants by 10 PM to curb pollution levels. Residents are urged to follow health precautions and limit outdoor activities.
