In a bid to stabilise onion prices in major cities, the Indian government has dispatched its fifth bulk shipment of 720 tons of buffer onions to the national capital.
The shipment, part of the Centre's market intervention strategy, left Nashik on November 20 and is set to arrive in Delhi today.
The buffer onions from Maharashtra being transported to Delhi via railways. Over the past month, 4,010 tons of onions have already been sent to Delhi for retail distribution, priced at an affordable ₹35 per kilogram (approximately $0.42).
The fifth shipment, comprising 720 tons, is expected to reinforce price stability in Delhi-NCR," an official statement revealed. The stock has been allocated to retail giants like Mother Dairy, NCCF, and Nafed for distribution across the region.
Beyond Delhi, the government has also targeted onion price stabilization in Chennai, Guwahati, and plans to dispatch additional shipments to Lucknow.
This year, India accumulated 517,000 tons of onions in its buffer stock, of which 150,000 tons have already been released.
