Pakistan's white-ball team head coach, Aaqib Javed, praised Fakhar Zaman as a match-winning player, emphasising that if he remains fit, he will be selected in the team.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Aqib highlighted that the new selection committee has significantly improved Pakistan's cricketing results. He also mentioned that Australia's conditions are not easy.
“The results have improved a lot with the arrival of the new selection committee. Winning a series in Australia after 22 years was a major achievement, especially given the tough conditions there. The host team was also finding it difficult,” he said. Aqib also noted that playing according to conditions is crucial.
Aqib Javed said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had given him additional responsibilities, which he would try to fulfil to the fullest. "I have been coaching for over 22 years and will use my experience with the team."
On Fakhar Zaman, Aqib acknowledged his talent and contributions to Pakistan’s successes. “Fakhar is a match-winning player. He had fitness issues, but if he improves, the selection committee will definitely reconsider him,” he assured.
He also explained that the selection committee did not choose the team without the consent of the captain and coach, adding that efforts would be made to select the best available players.
Aqib also shared insights into Pakistan's strategic focus. “There’s still over a year left for the next T20 World Cup, so a lot of changes will be seen. New players should be given opportunities, just as we have in the team for Zimbabwe. We’ll focus on ODI matches in upcoming series like Zimbabwe.”
Highlighting the importance of understanding match conditions, Aqib said aggressive cricket is essential in T20s, but players must also adapt to varying situations. “In Asia, target rates rise during games, while even Australian players struggle to score 200 runs on their home grounds,” he observed.
Aqib expressed confidence in emerging talent like Saim Ayub, whose career he believes is progressing well. He stressed the importance of giving new players chances and prioritising responsibility over strike rates, aiming to develop a balanced team.
