Pakistan is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to secure hosting rights for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy following India’s reported refusal to participate in the tournament if it is held in Pakistan.
According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has rejected the proposed “Hybrid model” suggested by the ICC as an alternative venue arrangement, prompting Pakistan to reach out to ICC member states directly.
The PCB has decided to send formal letters to the cricket boards of participating nations, taking them into confidence regarding the hosting status and stressing Pakistan’s capacity to host major international tournaments safely.
The list includes countries whose teams have recently visited Pakistan, such as Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and South Africa, demonstrating Pakistan’s credibility as a host. The Pakistani government also plans to communicate with other nations through diplomatic channels to garner support.
ICC voting process
If the issue escalates, it could lead to a formal vote within the ICC. For Pakistan to retain hosting rights in such a scenario, it would need a minimum of 8 out of 12 votes from the member countries. With backing from most visiting teams, Pakistan aims to solidify its stance, showcasing its success in hosting numerous high-profile international series over the last decade.
The PCB remains optimistic that, with majority support, the ICC will confirm Pakistan as the Champions Trophy host, despite opposition.
