Authorities have imposed a curfew in Manipur's Jiribam district following the deaths of ten Kuki Christians in an incident involving law enforcement personnel. The development marks another chapter in the ongoing ethnic tensions plaguing the northeastern state.
The Kuki Zo Council has alleged that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel conducted fake encounters, resulting in the deaths of their community members. In response to these fatalities, tribal groups announced a shutdown across Manipur from 5 AM to 6 PM.
According to tribal representatives, the deceased individuals were unarmed, contradicting official claims about their involvement in aggressive actions. The situation has further deteriorated with reports of five individuals going missing from a Kuki relief camp located within a police station compound, with family members claiming they were killed in custody.
Local officials have acknowledged the disappearances from the relief camp and initiated an investigation into the matter. These incidents have intensified the existing ethnic conflicts in Manipur, with tribal leaders now advocating for a separate state.
The violence in Manipur continues to claim lives despite administrative measures, highlighting the challenges in maintaining peace in the region. The state has witnessed numerous such incidents since the outbreak of ethnic clashes.
