The 77th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Hussain Khan, a prominent military commander in Azad Kashmir's history, is being observed today. Born in Hussain Kot, Captain Hussain served on the Burma front during World War II in 1936.
Following the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, he organized retired soldiers at the local level. After the massacre in Bagh on August 26, 1947, Captain Hussain initiated the freedom movement. Under his leadership, successful military operations were conducted in Rawalakot and Hajira on August 28 and 29.
On November 7, he laid siege to Dogra forces in Rawalakot, resulting in the enemy's retreat towards Poonch on the night of November 9. In an attempt to recapture Rawalakot, Dogra forces deployed three battalions comprising 2,000 troops. Captain Hussain Khan embraced martyrdom during an encounter with enemy forces at Tangi Gala on November 11, 1947.
In recognition of his valiant services, he was awarded the Hilal-e-Kashmir. Today, Kashmiris still remember him by the title "Fateh Rawalakot" (Liberator of Rawalakot).
