The Ministry of Energy announced on Friday a new electricity relief package offering substantial discounts on electricity tariffs in a bid to ease the financial burden on consumers.
According to details, the package, effective from December 2024 to February 2025 has aimed to provide relief to the domestic, commercial and industrial consumers across the country.
Under the new initiative, additional electricity usage will be charged at a flat rate of Rs26.07 per unit, offering savings of up to Rs26 per unit for the domestic users, compared to last year's rates
This rate will apply to excess electricity consumption above the standard allotment.
For domestic consumers, who currently pay between Rs37.49 and Rs52.07 per unit, the new pricing structure will bring relief, reducing their per-unit cost to Rs26.07, resulting in savings ranging from Rs11.42 to Rs26 per unit.
In the industrial sector, where electricity rates range between Rs31.79 to Rs41.12 per unit, the new rates will bring down the cost to Rs26.07 rupees per unit, offering savings between Rs5.72 to Rs15.05 per unit for businesses.
Similarly, commercial consumers will benefit from a reduced rate of Rs26.07 per unit for additional usage, cutting their current electricity bills, which range from Rs39.53 to Rs48.78 per unit, by up to Rs13.46 to Rs22.71 per unit.
The relief package is expected to help alleviate the financial pressure on consumers, particularly amid ongoing inflationary concerns. The Ministry of Energy had emphasized that the package will apply to all sectors— domestic, commercial and industrial — ensuring broad-based benefits.
