The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has been actively advocating for the Modi government, with evidence emerging of its lobbying efforts in the U.S. capital, Capitol Hill.
Since Modi's rise to power in 2014, the HAF has intensified its political activities, closely aligned with Modi's Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reports indicate that the founders of the HAF have received financial support from the Modi administration, as the organization maintains close ties with the government and presents a defensive narrative against its critics.
The HAF has defended Modi's regime amid allegations of human rights violations against minorities in India and has been directly linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization.
Furthermore, the HAF has been accused of negatively portraying human rights issues in Pakistan to divert attention from the human rights problems faced by minorities in India.
Alarmingly, the Foundation supports the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which has faced international criticism for its discriminatory nature against Muslims.
Internationally, the HAF's efforts have played a significant role in downplaying violence against minorities in India. The organization has even supported Modi during incidents of violence in Gujarat, raising concerns over its promotion of religious nationalism.
Critics argue that the HAF's campaigns in favour of Modi and against Indian Muslims violate U.S. laws, particularly since it has not registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), despite engaging in political activities that align with the BJP's agenda.
This situation warrants attention from U.S. courts, as the Foundation's actions seem to contradict the principles of U.S. foreign policy.
