The Reko Diq project, located in Balochistan's Chagai district, is set to play a crucial role in Pakistan's economy starting from 2028. The project, which completed its restructuring process in December 2022, is estimated to produce 200,000 tons of copper and 250,000 ounces of gold annually for over half a century.
Recently, Saudi Arabia has offered to invest 15% in the mining project, further solidifying its international status. Mark Bristow, CEO of Barrick Gold Company, stated that while the project is initially expected to run for 45 years, it has the potential to extend up to 100 years.
The venture is projected to create 8,000 jobs during its construction phase and 4,000 long-term positions once production begins. It aims to boost Pakistan's energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Barrick Gold Company has already initiated social development projects in the region. Four primary schools have been established in Hummai, Durban Chah, Nokundi, and Nokkha. The company is also setting up vocational training schools. In partnership with Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN), healthcare services have been introduced in Chagai district, including community health centers in Hummai and Nokundi, and a mobile health unit for smaller settlements.
Clean water plants have been installed in Humai, Mashki Chah, and Nok Chah villages, with plans for additional treatment plants underway.
The Reko Diq project is poised to transform Balochistan's socio-economic landscape and contribute significantly to Pakistan's overall economic growth and stability.
