Netflix has announced that it will no longer provide updates for its streaming application on devices running iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.
The streaming giant revealed that future updates to its app will require devices to be running iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 and above.
This decision means that owners of older iPhone and iPad models who have not yet upgraded to the latest operating systems may soon find themselves unable to access the updated Netflix app.
According to reports. affected users are receiving alerts urging them to upgrade to iOS 17 to continue using the app's latest features. The alert reads: "We’ve updated the Netflix app! To use the latest version, install iOS 17 or later."
At present, the Netflix app continues to function on devices running older operating systems. However, users may experience issues if Netflix decides to eventually discontinue support for the outdated app version.
Furthermore, ongoing usage may expose devices to potential bugs and security vulnerabilities that are not addressed in older app versions.
The iPhone and iPad models impacted by this decision include:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPad 5th generation
- iPad Pro 1st generation
The discontinuation of support for these devices is expected to affect many users, particularly iPad owners, as tablets are often kept for extended periods and repurposed for streaming within households.
Netflix’s move to cut support for older devices follows a similar decision earlier this year when the company ceased support for the second and third-generation Apple TV set-top boxes. In a statement, Netflix emphasized that the decision was made to ensure users receive "the best experience possible."
