Havaldar Lalak Jan, recipient of Nishan-e-Haider, exemplified exceptional defensive strategy during the 1999 conflict with India. Initially stationed at the company headquarters, Lalak Jan volunteered for frontline duty as tensions escalated in May 1999.
With a small contingent, Lalak Jan successfully defended his post against multiple enemy attacks, inflicting significant casualties. On July 7, despite heavy shelling throughout the day and a three-pronged attack at night, Lalak Jan, though severely wounded, refused to retreat.
His counterattack resulted in heavy enemy losses. Lalak Jan subsequently succumbed to his injuries while defending his post. Enemy accounts acknowledge this as an supreme example of courageous defense to the last man.
