While openly expressing that it opposes regime change, the United States has clarified its position and emphasized its support for democratic procedures and free and fair elections in Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference in Washington, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US State Department, addressed this issue. He stressed Pakistan’s importance to the United States as a dependable partner and the cooperation between the two countries on a number of topics.
The US does not support regime change in Pakistan, Miller said, reiterating the US's consistent stance on the country.
He said that Pakistan’s upcoming elections are important to both the US and Pakistan, who are united in their support for the holding of fair and free elections, adding that the main focus of the US government is on making sure that the voting process is impartial and fair.
The US continues to support Pakistani democracy and the democratic process while expressing no desire to affect a change in the country's government, the US State Department added.
