Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of potential severe flooding as pre-monsoon rains are forecasted to commence on June 19.
PDMA showed concern a significant increase in rainfall this season, predicting a 35 percent rise in precipitation compared to previous years.
As per PDMA, this time the outlook of the monsoon suggested that there is a possibility of 35 percent more rain than usual across the country.
There is a possibility of more rain this year, which could worsen the flood situation across the country, especially in Punjab, worse than the floods in 2022.
The PDMA's weather alert indicated that the province will experience hot and dry conditions from June 16 to 18, followed by widespread thundershowers from June 18 to 22. Specifically, South Punjab is expected to receive significant rainfall from June 20 to 22.
South Punjab likely to receive 25 percent more rains
South Punjab is likely to receive 25 percent more rains and northern Punjab is likely to receive 38 percent more than normal rains, making Monsoon rains likely to be 30 percent more than normal across Punjab.
Early glacier melt due to high temperatures has already increased river water flow, compounding the potential for flooding.
"Since the temperature is very high this time due to which the process of melting of glaciers has started early, we will have more water flow in the rivers," he said.
PDMA in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Meteorological Department (PMD) is closely monitoring the situation using advanced weather forecasting models.
The concerned authorities urged residents, particularly in flood-prone areas, to stay alert and prepared for possible emergency measures.
