The Commissioner of Karachi on Saturday imposed a ban on bathing, swimming, and diving in the sea for two months.
The decision comes as a precautionary measure in light of the anticipated high tides and turbulent conditions in the Arabian Sea.
Effective immediately, the ban will remain in place until August 13, 2024, encompassing popular coastal spots such as Mubarak Village and Sunehra Beach, also known as French Beach, among others.
The timing of the ban coincides with the upcoming Eidul Adha festivities, set to be celebrated on June 17, 2024. Traditionally, Karachi’s beaches witness a significant surge in visitors during the Eid holidays, with families flocking to the shorelines to enjoy the festive break.
The commissioner’s directive aims to safeguard these celebrants from the potential hazards posed by the rough sea conditions during this period.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of public safety and urged citizens to comply with the ban to avoid unfortunate incidents. “This decision is in the best interest of public safety. We urge everyone to adhere to the ban and avoid any unnecessary risks during this monsoon season,” the Commissioner stated.
To ensure strict enforcement of the ban, the Karachi police have been instructed to monitor the coastal areas vigilantly. Violators of the order will face legal action, with police directed to register cases against those who disregard the prohibition.
The local authorities have also launched an awareness campaign to inform the public about the dangers of sea bathing during the monsoon and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines. The campaign includes public service messages across various media platforms, highlighting the risks and the rationale behind the ban.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy alternative recreational activities that do not involve the sea, ensuring a safe and joyous Eid celebration.
