The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued on Thursday a stern advisory for the month of June, cautioning residents of Sindh and Punjab about an impending extreme heatwave.
In Sindh, the districts of Umarkot, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, and Sanghar are expected to experience sweltering temperatures, pushing the mercury to alarming levels. Similarly, in Punjab, the districts of Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur are likely to be under the oppressive grip of the heatwave.
Meteorological conditions
The meteorological outlook suggests that the heatwave conditions will be accompanied by dusty winds and thunderstorms in the upper regions of the country. From tomorrow until June 5, sporadic light rain is anticipated in the northern districts, providing some respite to the otherwise dry spell.
Areas including Chitral, Dir, Bunir, Malakand, Swabi, Mardan, Mansehra, and Abbottabad are expected to witness light showers. Additionally, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are forecasted to receive light rain along with wind and thunder during this period.
Public advisory
The NDMA has urged the public to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight, and using appropriate protective measures are strongly recommended. Farmers and outdoor workers are advised to schedule their activities during cooler parts of the day to prevent heat exhaustion.
Authorities have been instructed to remain vigilant and ensure that medical facilities are prepared to handle an influx of heatstroke patients. Emergency services are on high alert to respond to any incidents resulting from the extreme weather conditions.
