First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been designated to oversee the country's executive branch and will hold the position for an interim period of 50 days, during which a new presidential election must be conducted. Mokhber has pledged to continue Raisi’s path and ensure the uninterrupted fulfillment of governmental duties.
“In accordance with Article 131 of the constitution, Mokhber is in charge of leading the executive branch,” said Khamenei in a statement, adding that Mokhber will be required to work with the heads of legislative and judicial to prepare for presidential elections “within a maximum period of 50 days”.
Ali Bagheri Kani has been appointed as the acting foreign minister in the wake of this tragedy, according to IRNA. Raisi's remains are being transported to Tabriz, but details regarding his funeral arrangements are still forthcoming.
In response to the incident, an extraordinary meeting involving Iran’s three branches of government was held on Monday. Mokhber represented the executive branch, while representatives from the legislative and judiciary branches also attended.
"We will follow the path of President Raisi in fulfilling assigned duties without any interruption," Mokhber assured during the meeting. According to the constitution of the Islamic Republic, the first vice president assumes the role of president temporarily with the Supreme Leader’s approval, and an election is to be held within 50 days to elect a new president.
This tragic event has prompted condolences from global leaders, who have expressed their deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of Iran during this difficult time. As the nation mourns, preparations are underway to honor Raisi's legacy and ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
