Figures of love and compassion, like Abdul Sattar Edhi, remain eternal in the hearts of many. Born on February 28, 1928, in the Indian city of Bantwa, Edhi moved to Pakistan with his family following the partition of India in 1947. Settling in Karachi, his journey of philanthropy began at a young age, driven by a profound desire to help those in need.
In 1951, Abdul Sattar Edhi established his first dispensary, marking the inception of what would become a lifelong mission of service.
With just Rs5,000, he founded the first welfare center and subsequently the Edhi Trust. His work extended beyond supporting needy children; he offered a compassionate hand to orphans and the impoverished, embodying the very essence of humanitarianism.
The Edhi Foundation, known for its extensive volunteer network, has reached beyond Pakistan’s borders, aiding suffering humanity worldwide. Under the leadership of Faisal Edhi, the foundation continues to uphold Abdul Sattar Edhi's legacy of selfless service.
In recognition of his unparalleled contributions, the government of Pakistan awarded Abdul Sattar Edhi the Shield of Honor in 1980. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) also issued a commemorative 50-rupee coin in his honor.
On July 8, 2016, Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away at the age of 88. His death marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on. Edhi was laid to rest with official honors in a local cemetery in Karachi, leaving behind a world forever touched by his boundless compassion and dedication.
