Today marks the 35th anniversary of Operation Chumik, a historic battle in the annals of Pakistan's military history, particularly on the challenging terrain of the Siachen Glacier.
Operation Chumik stands as a testament to the unwavering courage and resilience of the Pakistani armed forces in the face of extreme adversities.
On April 30, 1989, amidst the harsh conditions of Siachen, Lieutenant Naveedur Rahman embarked on a daring mission to secure the Chumik Sector against potential infiltration by enemy forces. In the words of Major (Retd) Naveedur Rehman, Sitara-i-Jurat, this operation was not just a battle against the adversary but also a relentless struggle against the formidable foes of nature.
Operation Chumik began with intercepted intelligence revealing the enemy's plan to seize strategic posts in the Chumik Sector. Prompt action by the Pakistani Army thwarted the enemy's advances, with Maj (retd) Rahman leading the charge to establish the world's highest post at an altitude of 21,400 feet.
Braving sub-zero temperatures and relentless enemy shelling, Major (retd) Rahman and his comrades held their ground, demonstrating extraordinary valour and fortitude. Despite sustaining injuries, their resolve remained unshaken as they repelled enemy assaults and maintained a steadfast defence.
The heroism displayed during Operation Chumik resulted in the successful defence of Pakistani territory and the safeguarding of national sovereignty. Lance Naik Nazir, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the operation, epitomizes the selfless devotion of Pakistan's brave defenders.
In recognition of his exceptional bravery, Lieutenant Naveedur Rahman was bestowed with the Sitara-i-Jurat, and the post he established was aptly named “Naveed Top.” Today, this site serves as a symbol of Pakistan's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to safeguarding its borders.
As the nation commemorates the valour and sacrifices of its heroes, the legacy of Operation Chumik continues to inspire future generations of defenders, reminding us of the valour and sacrifice embedded in the green crescent flag of Pakistan.
