Karachi is expected to experience a significant rise in temperature today, with the mercury likely to reach 39 degrees Celsius, according to the Met Department.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz stated that the average temperature for October in Karachi is 35.6 degrees Celsius, but during this partial heatwave, the temperature could increase by 2 to 3 degrees.
The Met Office has forecasted hot and dry weather conditions over the next 24 hours, with the current temperature standing at 28 degrees Celsius. Sea breezes, which normally help moderate Karachi’s climate, are partially suspended.
In addition to the heat, the city’s air quality has taken a toll. Karachi is ranked the seventh most polluted city in the world and the second most polluted city in Pakistan, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI).
The AQI has recorded 153 particulate matter (PM), a level deemed harmful to human health. PM levels between 100 and 200 pose significant health risks, while levels above 200 are considered dangerous.
Given these conditions, the AQI has urged citizens to take necessary precautions to protect their health, particularly those with respiratory issues, children, and the elderly.
Authorities are monitoring both the weather and air quality closely, advising residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, remain hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to outdoor air.
