Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has voiced grave concern regarding the involvement of India's intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), in global acts of terrorism and targeted killings.
This statement comes after investigations revealed that Indian operatives were implicated in the assassination of Sikh leaders, including Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Minister Wong, addressing the issue, emphasised that Australia stands firmly for the protection of the Sikh community, asserting that all individuals, including Sikhs, have the right to seek refuge and respect in Australia. She reiterated that the country respects Canada’s judicial process and called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the allegations.
In an official statement, Wong affirmed that Australia upholds the rule of law, judicial independence, and the sovereignty of all nations. She added that the Australian government supports Canada’s inquiry into the murder of Nijjar, whose killing was reportedly ordered by Indian intelligence agencies.
The concerns raised by Australia echo those of other international voices, with Canada accusing Indian officials of plotting killings on foreign soil. According to reports, a list of prominent Sikh leaders, including Nijjar, was provided to Canadian authorities, who concluded that RAW was behind the murder. These revelations have shed light on the growing global awareness of India’s covert operations through its intelligence agency, which is reportedly targeting individuals and groups abroad.
As investigations continue, the international community has called for accountability and transparency in addressing such covert operations, emphasizing the need to respect national sovereignty and human rights in the global context.
