In a dramatic shift of fortunes, Jeff Bezos has once again ascended to the throne of the world's wealthiest individual, surpassing Tesla mogul Elon Musk, as reported by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
With a staggering net worth of $200 billion, the Amazon titan has edged out Musk, whose fortune currently stands at $198 billion. The reversal marks a significant turn of events, with Bezos gaining $23 billion over the past year while Musk faced a loss of approximately $31 billion, according to the index.
The tide of financial fate seems to have turned for Musk, whose Tesla shares plummeted over 7% on Monday, adding to the strain on his wealth.
Bezos' resurgence comes in the wake of fierce competition among the centibillionaires, a league which also includes LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault, boasting luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Celine.
Musk's brief stint as the world's richest person began in May 2023, when he outpaced Arnault. However, Bezos' relentless climb back to the top underscores the volatile nature of global wealth rankings, with positions often dictated by market performances.
Earlier this year, Musk faced setbacks as a Delaware state court judge dismissed his hefty 2018 pay package, valued at over $50 billion, which had significantly contributed to his wealth. Tesla shares also experienced a sharp decline of about 24% year-to-date, further affecting Musk's standing.
Despite this reversal, Musk and Arnault remain formidable figures in the realm of global wealth. The staggering wealth accumulation of these elite individuals, which has soared by 114% since 2020, now totals a staggering $869 billion, after adjusting for inflation, according to Oxfam's annual inequality report.
