Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan sustained serious injuries after an intruder entered his Bandra residence on January 16.
The Mumbai Police revealed that both security guards at the building were asleep when the attacker, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad alias Vijay Das, illegally entered the premises.
According to the police, the 30-year-old Bangladeshi national scaled the compound wall to gain access, as the main entrance lacked CCTV surveillance. “The intruder found the security guards asleep, one in the cabin and the other near the gate.
He removed his shoes, placed them in his bag, and switched off his phone to avoid detection,” an official told news agency PTI.
The accused entered Saif's 12-storey building with the intention of robbery. However, the situation escalated when he was spotted in the room of the actor’s younger son, Jeh, by a house help. The alarmed staff raised an alert, leading to a confrontation between Saif and the intruder.
The altercation resulted in Saif being stabbed multiple times, including a grave injury near his spine. The actor was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where surgeons removed a knife fragment lodged in his back and repaired spinal fluid leakage. Saif was discharged five days later on January 21.
The Mumbai Police recreated the crime scene on Tuesday to understand the sequence of events. Shehzad reportedly entered India illegally seven months ago and used a forged Aadhaar card from West Bengal to procure a SIM card before relocating to Mumbai.
Police arrested Shehzad from Thane on January 19. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are assessing security lapses, including the absence of CCTV cameras in critical areas of the building.
