On the 28th death anniversary of legendary Lollywood actor Sultan Rahi on Thursday, his son Haider Sultan has called for reopening the investigation into his father's murder.
Sultan Rahi, an iconic figure in Pakistani cinema, was tragically killed on GT Road while travelling from Islamabad to Lahore in 1996.
Speaking to the media, Haider Sultan emphasised the need for justice and transparency in his father’s case. "The government should order a thorough investigation into my father’s murder," he urged.
Haider Sultan highlighted the significance of questioning the driver who accompanied Sultan Rahi at the time of the incident. "The driver who was with my father is still alive. Investigative agencies should interrogate him to uncover any potential leads," he said.
Sultan Rahi’s murder remains a dark chapter in the history of Pakistani entertainment, leaving fans and loved ones yearning for answers. Known for his stellar performances in Punjabi cinema, including the iconic 'Maula Jatt', Rahi’s legacy continues to inspire millions.
On January 9, 1996, he was returning late at night from Islamabad when his car’s tyre deflated near Samanabad Chungi close to Gujranwala on Main GT Road. Taking advantage of the darkness and deserted surroundings, some men approached the vehicle and opened fire on him. Rahi sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Gujranwala DHQ Hospital where he breathed his last.
During his career, Rahi won almost 160 awards. Some of his major films, besides 'Maula Jatt', include 'Sher Khan', 'Chan Veryam', 'Babul Sadqay Tere', 'Sharif Badmash', 'Basheera' and 'Wehsi Gujjar'.
