Zendaya - a name synonymous with powerful performances - has always harbored an interest in filmmaking, though she admits to a fair share of apprehension about stepping behind the camera.
However, the star of Dune found a source of inspiration and reassurance in none other than Hollywood icon, Angelina Jolie.
During her appearance at The Hollywood Reporter’s Actress Roundtable, Zendaya expressed her admiration for Jolie, who has a history of directing acclaimed films, saying, “You truly are an amalgamation of all these genius people’s ideas.”
Zendaya reflected on a conversation they had about directing, a field she aspires to explore one day.“That’s what we were just talking about with directing because I would love to direct one day and you’ve been able to do it — and in a beautiful way.”
While Zendaya’s interest in directing was genuine, she candidly shared that the idea made her nervous. “Something that makes me so nervous is [directing],” Zendaya admitted. “But there are people to help you.
There are these gorgeous teams of people that we get to work with that create just as much as we do, the characters that we play.” It was then that Jolie’s wisdom alleviated Zendaya’s fears. “Jolie was like, ‘There are people who will help you,’” Zendaya said, reflecting on the kind words that calmed her nerves.
Zendaya’s appreciation for Jolie’s guidance highlights a significant aspect of the filmmaking process: the collaborative nature of the industry. While the director may take the lead, the creative contributions of a team are essential in shaping the final product.
In a separate moment of warmth, Angelina Jolie herself received accolades at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, where she accepted a prestigious award.
During her speech, Jolie took a moment to celebrate her children, who she credits with bringing a sense of authenticity to her life. "I am around today because when I walk off this stage, I am more myself because of you, Zahara, and your brothers and sisters. I love you," she expressed with heartfelt emotion.
Jolie’s words resonated with the crowd as she acknowledged the importance of support systems, not only in the entertainment industry but in life as a whole. "I am very honored to be here tonight with so many artists I have long admired. But to everyone who is there as a support to a celebrated artist, tonight and every night, who is there with kindness and understanding, thank you. You make everything possible," she concluded, her speech a testament to the strength of family and community in both personal and professional realms.
