The South Asian Athletics Federation (SAAF) Cross Country Athletics Championships 2024, originally scheduled for November 24 in Islamabad, has been postponed due to persistent hazardous smog in central Punjab.
The decision was made following government deliberations and consultations with SAAF leadership, as the smog poses serious health risks. Strict measures, including the closure of educational institutions and restricted business hours, have been enforced across affected areas.
Two participating teams were scheduled to travel from Lahore to Islamabad by road, but road closures and airspace restrictions during the travel period have hampered preparations.
The unrelenting smog and its potential health impact on athletes necessitated the postponement.
The championships are expected to be rescheduled in a couple of months. New dates will be announced soon, ensuring a safer environment for all participants.
