Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has highlighted the critical need for global cooperation and systemic reforms to address the world's most pressing security and development challenges.
He stressed that global stability is unattainable as long as crises such as the Gaza tragedy persisted.
During his address at a United Nations meeting, Khawaja Asif called for collective efforts to counter security threats that endanger not just peace and the current generation, but also future ones. He underscored that over 100 developing countries are in dire need of global system reforms to create opportunities for growth and stability.
"As a global community, we have a role to play in charting a better course for the world," he said, urging nations to work together to achieve a safer, more peaceful, inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous future.
The defense minister advocated for the establishment of a Global Digital Compact to ensure that future generations have access to digital opportunities, adding that bridging the digital divide is essential for an equitable future. He also highlighted the need for an agreement on future solutions that would pave the way for a more equitable world.
He also addressed the staggering $4 trillion financing gap for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To bridge this gap, Asif said, there was a need to review and reform the sovereign debt system to make it fairer for developing nations. He also emphasized the need for a fair global tax regime and suggested that debt costs for developing countries should be reduced to alleviate their financial burdens.
Furthermore, Khawaja Asif stressed the importance of fulfilling the promises of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to support the economic growth of developing countries. He also sought a reduction in the debt costs for developing countries.
Asif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to working with the international community to create a just and fair global system that benefits all nations, especially those in the developing world.
