The Pakistan Army has emphasised the significance of justice and vowed to ensure the state’s writ is upheld by punishing all perpetrators of the May 9, 2023 violence.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that the sentences for individuals involved in the May 9 incidents have been handed down after a thorough examination of evidence and the completion of legal proceedings. These rulings mark a critical milestone in addressing the tragic events that unfolded on what is now referred to as a “dark chapter” in Pakistan's history.
It said that on May 9, 2023, politically motivated violence erupted in various locations across the country. "Building on a sustained narrative of hate and lies, politically orchestrated attacks were carried out on the installations of the Armed Forces including desecration of the martyrs’ monuments," it added. The events shocked the nation, prompting immediate action to restore law and order.
ISPR revealed that irrefutable evidence against the accused was meticulously gathered and presented during the investigations. Some cases were referred to the Field General Court Martial, where the accused were tried under due legal processes.
On December 13, the Supreme Court ordered the resolution of pending cases, leading to the sentencing of 25 individuals. The accused were granted all legal rights during their trials, ISPR confirmed, emphasizing that the rulings serve as a clear message against political terrorism.
While several convictions have been finalized, the Pakistan Army stressed that justice will only be complete when the masterminds behind the May 9 incidents are held accountable. ISPR reiterated that the planners of the tragedy must face the law to ensure justice is fully served.
The Pakistan Army stated that sentences for other accused individuals are pending and will be announced after the completion of the legal process. Cases involving other suspects are also being heard in anti-terrorism courts, and efforts are underway to bring all responsible parties to justice.
The ISPR assured that all convicted individuals retain the right to appeal and access legal remedies, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
The Pakistan Army described the sentences as a stern warning to anyone who seeks to exploit political propaganda and engage in violence. The ISPR emphasised the state’s commitment to eradicating politics fuelled by hate and lies, ensuring peace and stability across the country.
"This decision is based on justice that negates hatred, division, and baseless propaganda," the ISPR said, adding that the May 9 incidents have underscored the importance of protecting the state’s integrity against any form of political terrorism.
