The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Wednesday that Dawid Malan, once the world's top-ranked batter in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), has officially retired from international cricket.
Malan, who is set to turn 37 next week, made his mark in both One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20Is, with 30 and 62 appearances, respectively. His last outing for England was during the 50-over World Cup in November.
A left-handed batter born in Roehampton, Malan achieved the rare feat of scoring centuries across all three formats of the game. His cricketing achievements include six centuries in ODIs, one in Tests, and one in T20Is. Alongside Jos Buttler, he is one of only two England men’s cricketers to accomplish this.
Reflecting on his career, Malan said, "It has been an incredible journey since July 2017. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for England in all three formats." He expressed his gratitude to the coaches, staff, and teammates who supported him throughout his seven-year international career.
England men's cricket managing director Rob Key praised Malan's significant contributions, particularly highlighting his role in England's T20 World Cup victory in 2022. "His legacy will be remembered as one of tenacity and achievement on the international stage—traits any player would be extremely proud to have," Key stated.
Malan’s departure marks the end of a notable era for English cricket, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and excellence.
He had also represented Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
