The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) is taking action against illegal housing schemes in the city, and it found that 336 out of 484 housing societies in the city are illegal.
These societies do not have the necessary permits and approvals from the government.
RDA Director General (DG) Saif Anwar Jappa disclosed that Rawalpindi currently grants legal status to only 69 housing societies as they have fulfilled all essential prerequisites, including securing the necessary permits and approvals from relevant government agencies.
The authority has set up a special team to deal with illegal housing schemes. This team has already demolished 40 illegal housing societies.
The authority has also arrested eight people who are responsible for developing and selling illegal housing plots.
The RDA is also working with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to stop people from advertising illegal housing schemes on social media.
