As the clock ticks down to New Year’s Eve, the enchanting hills of Murree and the surrounding Galiyat region are gearing up for an anticipated influx of tourists seeking the magic of snowfall.
In response to the expected surge in tourists, the interim government has issued directives to local authorities to formulate a comprehensive contingency plan for the renowned hill station.
Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha presided over a crucial meeting where he underscored the need for coordinated efforts among all concerned departments.
To manage the anticipated traffic surge, approximately 150 traffic police personnel have been strategically deployed to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Their primary focus is on ensuring the safety and convenience of tourists flocking to the snow-capped wonderland.
In a bid to enhance the overall tourist experience, more than a dozen facilitation centers have been established to assist visitors with various services. Recognizing the challenges faced in previous years, officials have been sternly cautioned against taking leave during the peak tourist season to ensure the availability of crucial manpower.
To keep both locals and tourists well-informed, screens displaying real-time weather updates have been strategically placed throughout Murree. Additionally, a dedicated helpline has been established by the tourism department to address queries and concerns promptly.
2022 tragedy
One of the critical lessons learned from past incidents is the imperative need for effective road clearance. In 2022, 21 lives were tragically lost as heavy snow trapped individuals in their vehicles, leading to fatalities from hypothermia.
In response, the local administration has set up a monitoring room to closely observe and manage traffic, particularly the number of vehicles entering the hill station.
