The world-renowned Shakira caused a stir when she reached a last-minute resolution on the first day of her tax fraud trial in Barcelona.
The highly anticipated trial came to an abrupt end as Shakira accepted the terms of an agreement admitting to six instances of failing to pay Spanish taxes, totaling a staggering 14.5 million euros between 2012 and 2014.
In exchange for her guilty plea, Shakira was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay a hefty fine of 7.3 million euros, on top of the outstanding taxes and interest.
While this deal kept her out of jail, the conviction could have repercussions on another tax case currently underway.
The heart of the matter revolved around Shakira's place of residence from 2012 to 2014. Despite being officially based in the Bahamas, where taxes are lower, prosecutors argued that she spent a significant amount of time in Spain, where tax rates are higher.
