The nation on Monday solemnly marked the 13th anniversary of the Gayari sector tragedy, paying rich tribute to the 129 soldiers of the Pakistan Army who lost their lives in one of the most devastating avalanches in the country's military history.
On April 7, 2012, a massive avalanche struck the battalion headquarters of the Pakistan Army in the Gayari sector near the Siachen Glacier, burying the entire camp under deep snow and ice. Despite difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions, a large-scale rescue and recovery operation was launched by the Pakistan Army, which continued for several months.
Foreign experts had termed the site inaccessible, but Pakistan Army’s Corps of Engineers carried out the mission with unwavering resolve and professionalism. The scale of the disaster and the valour displayed during the response continues to resonate across the armed forces and the nation alike.
The Siachen region, often referred to as the highest battlefield on earth, has long been a harsh and treacherous post for soldiers due to its sub-zero temperatures, unpredictable avalanches, and rugged terrain. It remains a symbol of endurance, where nature poses as much of a challenge as the enemy.
In remembrance of the fallen, a Martyrs’ Memorial has been established at Gayari, honouring the sacrifice and bravery of the soldiers who embraced martyrdom in the line of duty. Commemorative ceremonies were held at various military installations and cantonments across the country, where prayers were offered and wreaths laid by senior officers and families of the martyrs.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in their separate messages paid homage to the martyred soldiers, stating that their sacrifice will forever be etched in the nation’s memory.
“The martyrs of Gayari are a shining example of unwavering patriotism and dedication,” said the prime minister, adding that the entire nation stands with the families of the fallen.
The tragedy served as a reminder of the immense human cost borne by soldiers stationed in high-altitude conflict zones, and the resilience with which the Pakistan Army continues to safeguard national frontiers.
