The founder of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Islam Mufti Munir Shakir killed in a bomb blast near a mosque in Peshawar.
The incident occurred in the limits of the Armar police station, when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated outside the mosque.
According to local police, three other individuals were injured in the blast and were immediately transported to Lady Reading Hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, police launched an investigation into the nature of the attack.
It is pertinent to note that Mufti Munir Shakir, renowned for his extremist views, had gained significant attention due to his frequent broadcasts on FM radio.
He had publicly expressed his radical beliefs, which had made him a controversial figure in certain circles. Shakir’s involvement with extremist ideologies was further highlighted by his association with the banned militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam, led by the notorious Mangal Bagh.
Terrorists launched assault in Khyber district
The terrorists launched an assault on the Bar Qamber Khel Takia Police Checkpost in the Khyber district, leading to intense gunfire exchange.
The terrorists, in an attempt to overpower the police post, opened fire before throwing two hand grenades.
However, the police swiftly responded with an immediate counterattack, forcing the assailants to retreat.
According to the police, no casualties occurred during the incident. A spokesperson for the Khyber Police stated, "The police acted promptly and managed to thwart the attack without any loss of life."
Despite the grenade explosions, the police maintained control of the checkpost, and the terrorists fled the scene before further escalation.
The situation was brought under control within minutes, ensuring the safety of the personnel at the checkpost.
