Minister for Aviation Khawaja Asif, while addressing a ceremony at Islamabad International Airport, expressed immense gratitude for the resumption of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe after a 4.5-year hiatus.
“I cannot thank Allah enough for this milestone,” said Khawaja Asif, highlighting that the return of PIA to European skies is a moment of national pride. “The green crescent flag will once again fly across the skies of Europe, restoring our identity that we had lost for years.”
The minister announced that PIA aims to expand operations throughout Europe and collaborate with other airlines to provide access to destinations in the United States, whether the passengers transit in Paris or anywhere else. He emphasised that efforts are underway to restart flights on three routes to Britain in the near future.
Khawaja Asif acknowledged the relentless efforts of his predecessor, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and the unwavering support of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who personally monitored the process. “Immense effort was put into restoring PIA operations over the last eight to 10 months, and today is a historic day for PIA, civil aviation, and the government,” he said.

He also credited the European Union aviation authorities for their cooperation and thanked the officials who worked tirelessly to secure the lifting of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) ban.
The minister stated that PIA has a significant role in stabilising the airline industry globally. He assured that steps are being taken to recapture the lost market, adding that new aircraft will soon be added to PIA’s fleet. “The outgoing flight to France was 100% booked, and in the coming days, we expect all flights to achieve similar booking levels,” he noted.
Khawaja Asif further emphasised the government’s intent to privatise PIA to ensure its efficiency and competitiveness in the global market. "It won't take long for us to privatise PIA."

He said PIA’s resumption of flights is expected to benefit thousands of overseas Pakistanis living in Europe. “PIA used to bring bodies of Pakistanis from Europe to Pakistan free of charge, and we will continue this service,” Khawaja Asif remarked.
He called out individuals responsible for the airline’s past controversies, stating, “Irresponsible statements in the past caused havoc for our national airline. Accountability is necessary for those who tarnished PIA’s reputation.”
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to restore PIA’s prestige and ensure its growth in the competitive airline industry.
