Shehroze Kashif, Pakistan’s youngest climber to conquer K2, has called for greater recognition and encouragement for mountaineers who represent the country on the world’s highest peaks.
Speaking during an interview, the 21-year-old mountaineer shared his journey and aspirations for the sport in Pakistan.
“I started climbing peaks 11 years ago and have since been fortunate to achieve many milestones,” Kashif said. He expressed pride in being the youngest to scale K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, and highlighted the global attention this feat brought to Pakistan.
Kashif praised the government’s recent initiatives to support athletes across various sports. “The Pakistani government is supporting all athletes, which is a good move. I am also looking forward to it,” he remarked.
The young climber emphasized the significance of mountaineering, describing it as an activity that not only showcases Pakistan’s natural beauty but also strengthens the country’s image on the international stage. “Mountaineers represent Pakistan on high mountains and deserve encouragement,” he added.
Kashif also expressed hope to meet Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, President Asif Zardari, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to discuss the future of mountaineering in Pakistan. “If the chief minister, president, or PM encourages me, it will be the best,” he stated.
