UNHCR Projected Global Resettlement Needs for 2025:
UNHCR estimates that 2.9 million refugees will need resettlement in 2025, an increase of around half a million from 2024 and more than double compared to 2021. The needs are distributed across various regions:
Asia and Pacific: The region has the largest resettlement needs globally, with 776,500 refugees, reflecting significant needs from Afghan and Rohingya refugees, up 6% from 2024.
Middle East and North Africa: Resettlement needs here have increased by 50%, reaching 703,700, driven by economic challenges and protection risks, including child labor and deportation. Lebanon alone accounts for about 200,000 refugees.
East and Horn of Africa & Great Lakes: 601,300 refugees are projected to need resettlement, influenced by new displacement, climate change, and economic shocks.
West and Central Africa: The crisis in Sudan has led to a 60% increase in resettlement needs, now totaling 178,900 refugees.
Americas: The resettlement needs in the Americas have surged by 70% to 179,600, largely due to displacement from South America to northern countries.
Europe (Türkiye): 350,600 refugees are projected to need resettlement.
Southern Africa: 125,300 refugees are expected to need resettlement, mostly from the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
