Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) has submitted an urgent request to the Israeli military, demanding the disclosure of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia's whereabouts.
Dr. Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza, was reportedly arrested during the storming and destruction of the hospital by Israeli forces.
According to PHRI, the doctor was "abducted" after refusing to leave the facility until all patients were safely evacuated. The organization condemned the arrest, calling it part of a wider assault on Gaza’s healthcare system.
PHRI revealed alarming statistics, stating that more than 1,000 healthcare workers in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces, over 230 detained, and 130 remain in custody. Additionally, the group reported widespread abuse and medical neglect of Palestinian detainees, leading to dozens of deaths, including three physicians, over the past 15 months.
International law guarantees special protections for healthcare workers, and PHRI has urged the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safia to prevent further escalation of this crisis.
