The prolonged closure of roads in Parachinar has exacerbated the plight of its residents, who have been protesting for six consecutive days.
Citizens have been deprived of essential food supplies and medical treatment, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the region.
According to Upper Kurram Tehsil Chairman Agha Muzammil Hussain, over 100 children have lost their lives due to the unavailability of treatment and basic facilities during the road closure. An equal number of cancer patients and others suffering from severe ailments have also succumbed to the crisis.
He warned that if the blockade that has trapped hundreds of thousands of people continues, he and other local government representatives would tender their resignations in protest against the inaction.
Despite freezing temperatures, large numbers of residents, including women and children, have been actively participating in the sit-in.
Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud acknowledged the citizens’ hardships and highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve the issue. A Grand Peace Jirga has been initiated to restore peace and address the problems caused by the road closures. Tribal elders and leaders have arrived in Kurram district to facilitate negotiations.
Pastor Riaz Masih said the Christian community in Parachinar celebrated Christmas with simplicity due to the unrest. He expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by tribal elders, which he said brought joy amidst the challenges.
Meanwhile, relief operations are underway under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has mobilised helicopters from the Cabinet Division to deliver medical supplies and evacuate critically ill patients.
On its first flight, the helicopter transported 500 kilogrammes of medicines to Parachinar and brought four patients to Islamabad for treatment. Another 500 kilograms of medicines were dispatched on a second flight, with plans for further evacuations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured the residents of Parachinar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of the federal government’s unwavering support during these challenging times.
