Mohammed Al Bashir, a former minister in opposition forces linked to Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS), has been tasked with forming a transitional government in Damascus following the fall of Bashar Al Assad, the Arab media claims.
Al Bashir, who previously led the HTS-affiliated Salvation Government opposing Assad's regime, will oversee Syria's transition to new leadership and prepare for elections, marking the country’s most significant political shift in over five decades, according to two opposition officials.
Born in Idlib province in 1983, Al Bashir is an engineer by profession and studied electrical engineering at Aleppo University, as detailed in a biography by the Salvation Government.
It remains unclear whether his appointment has been endorsed by HTS or by the Turkey-backed Syrian Interim Government, which controlled parts of northern Aleppo province before opposition forces advanced across Syria, capturing Damascus and ousting Assad on Sunday.
